Work And Live Abroad
If international travel is your goal, it can be economically beneficial to live abroad. By glancing over a world map, you can easily see how close some of the countries are on continents such as Africa, Asia and Europe. Shorter flights normally mean less time and fuel, which equates to cheaper tickets. Living and working abroad allowed me to use vacation times to visit nearby countries inexpensively.
You Want To Travel, But Not Live Abroad
You may not want to work or live in another country. Maybe you just want to spend a couple of weeks vacationing in Egypt and somewhere else; however, you can’t decide because it’s so expensive. Don’t worry, I got you!
Have you ever traveled, and had a layover somewhere before reaching your destination? Those layover places are called hub airports. When you start traveling abroad, there are a lot of hub airports that direct traffic all over the world. Let’s say, for example, you live in Atlanta, Georgia, and you want to go to Cairo, Egypt. You may have a layover at an airport in Istanbul, Turkey before heading to Cairo.
Here’s what I recommend doing to see more of the world for cheap. Stay in Istanbul, Turkey for a couple of days and spend the rest of the time in Cairo, Egypt. This is because the ticket price will be similar whether traveling to only Cairo or to both (Istanbul and Cairo). Would you rather visit one or two countries if the flight prices were almost the same?

You may want to know why I suggest staying in Istanbul. My answer is, “The ticket was cheap and you’re an adventurer. Research things to do and enjoy the trip!”
Remember, this is just an example. When you’re planning your trip, you’re going to get different results. Maybe you want to go to Cape Town and there’s a layover in London. Now you know how to visit both cost effectively.
Long Layovers Are Your Friend
When looking for tickets, you may get lucky and find a cheap direct flight. When that fails, there’s always the layover. Let’s go back to the example from earlier. Let’s say you don’t want to stay Istanbul, but wouldn’t mind checking out parts of the city. Look for a flight with a long layover. This will allow you to leave the airport, sight see, and make your flight to Cairo. If Cairo is the only place you want to visit and you want to get there as fast as possible, then book the flight with the shortest layover. It all depends on what you want to do.
Moreover, if you follow this advice, you may have concerns about what to do with your luggage. Many airports offer inexpensive short term luggage storage or locker rental services.
Conclusion
Ultimately, it’s all about where you want to go and how much you’re willing to pay. If you’re willing to modify your plans, you can go far. Last year, I purchased a ticket from Japan to Singapore to the Maldives to Malaysia and back to Japan for less than $700. It would’ve been almost the same price as a round trip from Japan to the Maldives. Each destination provided its own unique experience that will last a lifetime. Take chances, do the unexpected, and discover what adventures await you!
