Interview
How do we know one another?
Answer: We worked together in Nicaragua.
What sparked your interest in traveling?
Answer: I completed a university placement year in Chile and ended up catching the travel bug something rotten.
What do you enjoy most about being in another country?
Answer: Learning from different cultures, providing a fresh perspective on life, and just getting away from the daily grind.
What does it mean to travel off the grid? And what are some off the grid places you’ve been?
Answer: Travelling off the beaten track. Some of my best travel experiences have come when travelling in places where people aren’t used to tourism and people are genuinely friendly without any of the tourist traps. My favourite place for this is probably Kyrgyzstan.
Do you prefer solo or group travel? And why?
Answer: Travelling by yourself is the best for meeting new people and you will always make friends wherever you go. But nothing beats travelling with that special someone and making memories together.
I’m pretty sure you’ve been to places where you’ve stood out. How does it feel getting the unwanted attention? And how do you deal with it?
Answer: Being the only white guy can be quite daunting and you will often find people staring. A smile goes a long way and is useful. Hostile attention can be intimidating, and I have definitely felt out of my depth on a fair few occasions. Being both firm and polite, as well as travelling in groups, always helps.
When you’re in another country, what do you miss the most about being home?
Answer: My family, including my dog.
How do you spend your time during long layovers and long flights?
Answer: Read a book, watch a film, get some food, sleep. If you’ve got enough time, head into the closest city and see if it could be your next trip!
You just lost your passport. What do you do next?
Answer: I have done this twice. Once, it was stolen and I had to call the embassy and get an emergency travel document to get home. The other time, I lost it on a ski slope, called around relentlessly, and was eventually reunited with it.
You’re the star of a television program on the Travel Channel. What’s your show about?
Answer: Yoga.
What’s the best travel advice that you’ve either gotten, or have to give to prospective travelers?
Answer: Go and enjoy yourselves. Live your life with no regrets, so wherever you are, make the most of it.
